Abdominoplasty is suitable for patients who present skin flabbiness and excess of abdominal fat, especially in the area below the navel. It is recommended particularly in women who have had children. Pregnancy, besides distending the skin and the abdominal muscles, promotes accumulation of fat in the abdominal area, which is not usually eliminated with diets or physical exercises. Abdominoplasty is usually indicated for patient 30 years and older.

The abdominoplasty usually begins with liposuction to remove fat located in the abdomen and flanks, delineating the waist. Immediately after, an arched incision is made, above the pubic hair. Its extension depends on the amount of tissue to be removed. Right then, the flabbiness of the musculature is treated, improving the shaping of the waist. The navel is not removed, just shaped for aesthetic reasons.

Shortly after the surgery, bruises and a relative insensibility in some areas are common, which are relieved with the regular use of an elastic waist wrap, as well as with postoperative lymphatic drainage. Home rest is required during first week after the surgery.

Use of the waist wrap is recommended within a period of 30 days. After that period, the alternate use of the wrap is recommended for another 30 days. It’s recommended that during the postoperative, patients don't drive for a period of up to 40 days. Walks can be initiated starting from the 2nd month and physical exercises and direct sun exposure at the beginning of the 3rd month.

It is fundamental that medical recommendations are closely followed during the postoperative. The definitive results are observed in the period of 6 to 12 months. Stitches are removed usually on the 7th to the 15th day, and it is prefered the use of peridural anesthesia. The time of surgery is usually of 3 hours, and of the hospitalization is 24 hours.
