Breast reduction is the surgery which removes the skin excess, glandular tissue and fat, and provides aesthetic harmony to the physique of the patient, in what concerning to size, shape and position. This surgery is indicated in cases of big breasts, which in time cause posture problems and back pain. In some cases it can be recommended as an additional option in the prophylactic treatment of some breast diseases. The surgical procedure can be performed in patients that are 16 years or older. In some special cases it can be done in adolescents between 12 and 15 years for psychological reasons.

Several techniques can be used in the breast reduction surgery and the choice of one of them varies depending on the breast size and the degree of skin flabbiness found during a physical exam. It is important to point out that discreet asymmetries of both breasts are frequent, being present in 95% of the women that never underwent surgery. The postoperative is usually painless, as long as medical recommendations are carefully followed.

Home rest should be until the 7th day after the surgery. There are restrictions for excessive movement of the arms until the 7th or 15th day, when the stitches are removed. Sun exposure is allowed starting from the 2nd month. Physical exercise involving arms or thorax is allowed after the 3rd month.

The result can already be noticed in the first 30 days; however breasts reach their definitive look between the 6th and the 12th month, depending on scars, shape, volume, consistency and sensibility.
The anesthesia usually used in the cases of mammaplasty is general anesthesia, and the duration of the surgery varies upon breast types, usually lasting between 3 or 4 hours. Hospital stay period is of 24 hours.
