Breast augmentation, or placing of mammary implants is indicated for women who want to increase the volume of their breasts. If necessary, this procedure can be accomplished along with the mastopexia, or removal of the flabbiness of local skin.

Breast augmentation is a surgery that practically doesn't leave scars, because the incisions can be positioned in the creast below breasts, in the inferior outline of the areolas or under the armpits, depending upon each patient. In this procedure breast implants of silicon gel are used, that are put soon below the breast glandular tissue, providing a very natural aspect, and not altering the mammary physiology, that is, making possible that the patient can breastfeed, in case she becomes pregnant after the surgery.

The implant of silicon is usually well tolerated by the human body. A reduced number of patients (3%), however, presents unexpected reaction to the implant in one or in both breasts. In those unlikely cases removal of the capsule that the body has created around of the breast implant is performed. Most removal cases are solved with the drug treatment.

It is important to emphasize that placing breast implants doesn't cause inconveniences during the screening of mammary pathologies, usually accomplished through physical exam, ultrasound scan and mammography.

The postoperative is usually painless, if medical orientations are followed. These recommendations include home rest during the first week after the surgery, avoiding the excessive movement of arms during the first 15 days, and regular use of a support bra. Return to normal activities it´s allowed after 15 days, when the stitches are removed. Physical exercises and moderate sun exposure are permitted after the 2nd month.

This procedure usually has duration of 2 hours and is accomplished under local anesthesia and mitigation. Hospital stay is approximatelly 12 to 24 hours.
