Otoplasty is a procedure used to correct a type of anesthetic ear, commonly known as "ear in ventilator”, “fire-fan”, “fly-flap", in order to promote an aesthetic balance of the face. In these cases the patient has its ears positioned in a very apart way from the laterals of the head, presenting or not the cartilaginous outlines of a normal ear.

It is usually performed in young patients between 5 and 7 years old (pre-scholars), period in which the ear is practically developed and the children usually begin to present psychological problems caused by the anesthetic aspect of their ears.

Otoplasty is a relatively simple procedure and it consists basically in the retreat of the skin excess that lies behind the ear and the remodeling of its protrusion. Usually the scar is positioned behind the ear, leaving a nearly invisible scar.

The results are quite satisfactory and they can be noticed starting from the 7th day on the curatives removal.

Usually, the ears assume their definitive aspect after the 6th month. It is important to stand out that it’s common a discreet asymmetry among the ears, even in people that never submitted to that procedure.

The postoperative is usually painless and the patient can return in 7 days to their normal activities. It is recommended that the patient avoids lying down on the sides and that maintains the curative bandana for 15 days. During the first 30 days it is recommended that the patient sleeps with the curative bandana, and that avoids exposure to the sun and physical activities. The stitches will be removed between the 7th and the 15th day. In children the surgery is done under the effect of general anesthesia, and in adults, under local anesthesia with sedation. It has duration of approximately 2 hours and the hospitalization period varies from 12 to 24 hours.
